Deparment to prosecute over zoo keeper's death

3:09 pm on 7 December 2009

The Department of Labour is taking court action over the death of a keeper at the Zion Wildlife Gardens at Whangarei.

Dalu Mncube was mauled to death by a tiger in May this year as he cleaned its enclosure.

The Labour Department says it has laid charges under the Health and Safety in Employment Act. It is not saying who has been charged.

But it says the charges involve failing to ensure the safety of an employee and failing to ensure no hazard arises in the workplace.

The park was closed temporarily after the fatality by the Ministry of Agriculture which ordered alterations to several big enclosures to improve safety.
