The Armed Offenders Squad was called to a Wellington house after a man answered his door to police while holding a rifle.
Police say they were called to a Johnsonville house at about 11pm on Saturday in relation to another minor incident.
When the man, thought to be in his late 30s, came to the door with a gun, the officers withdrew and called for back-up.
Negotiators spoke with the man for two hours before he gave himself up.
