Fire fighters tackling blaze in Far North, dozens of homes evacuated

Dozens of properties are being evacuated as a large vegetation fire in Northland is encroaching on the township of Ahipara.

Fire and Emergency said tonight the fire had burnt through an area of approximately 1km by 1km. The fire was slowly spreading east and was currently uncontained.

Fire fighters were called to Ahipara Gumfields Historic Reserve at a 5.45pm this afternoon

Six helicopters and multiple crews from the region are in attendance.

Ground crews will remain overnight and once night fall comes, helicopters will be grounded until first light.

Police said they were evacuating 40 properties around Reef View Road and Foreshore Road.

Those affected by the evacuations are being encouraged to go to either the local rugby club or the Roma Marae, if they need to seek assistance.

Roadblocks are in place into the township.
