Mark Lockwood has been living in Vietnam for six years. He runs Nha Trang's Kiwi Bar, serving home-cooked dishes such as roast chicken, and is married with a 3-year-old son.

His family said doctors now believed the 58-year-old may have pneumonia.

Robert Lockwood said he spent his days waiting for news about his son, who attended Palmerston North Boys' High School and Massey University.

On a givealittle page set up to cover hospital costs, Mark Lockwood's sister Wendy Turner said machines were keeping her brother alive while his brain healed.

"It is too early to know what impact the accident has had but if he comes out of the coma it's likely he will need many months of rehabilitation to get his body and brain to function as well as it can after the accident," she said.

The givealittle page stated Mark had no medical cover.
