On 1 May this year, Mauha Fawcett was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum non-parole period of 20 years for his part in the 2008 murder of Miss Manning, whose brutalised body was found dumped in the Avon River.

In sentencing at the High Court in Christchurch, Justice Gendall told Fawcett there couldn't be a clearer case of cruelty, depravity and callousness.

The Court of Appeal has confirmed that Fawcett filed the appeal within two weeks of his conviction.

No date has yet been set for hearing it.
