12:23 pm on 26 March 2014

The search for a plane that went missing in the Auckland area on Tuesday has resumed in the north of Coromandel Peninsula and around Great Barrier Island.

The home-built aerobatic bi-plane disappeared from radar shortly after taking off from Ardmore airfield towards the Hauraki Gulf on Tuesday morning.

No distress beacon was activated, but the Rescue Coordination Centre launched a search after a friend of the 53-year-old pilot reported concern for his safety.

The centre said some reported sightings were being followed up by the Westpac rescue helicopter and an air force Orion.

It said people who saw the plane said it was heading north-east but not flying in an untoward manner.

The missing plane is blue and white, with twin wings and an open cockpit.
