Killer argues against parole decision

A man who murdered his wife with a hatchet has told the Wellington High Court he has been denied parole for the wrong reasons.

John Ericson was given a life sentence in 2000 for killing Sandra Ericson while she slept.

Ericson represented himself in court on Tuesday, arguing for a judicial review of a Parole Board decision from May last year.

He said he was sentenced under the Criminal Justice Act of 1985 and the board should use that law when considering his case.

Ericson said the board has been using the more recent Parole Act of 2002 so has required more proof of his suitability for release.

The Crown says the Parole Act is the relevant law.
