'Human error' blamed for university floor collapse

Canterbury University says human error is to blame for the collapse of part of a floor during a concert in its student events centre two weeks ago.

An investigation into the collapsefound that a structural engineer from the firm that designed part of the building did not factor in a dancing crowd when calculating the weight the floor would be able to hold.

Vice-chancellor Rod Carr says the investigation was done by independent structural engineers and is being peer-reviewed.

He says plans are under way to repair the floor so the centre can be reopened before the end of August.

Dr Carr says the entire floor area will be strengthened, even though only a small part of it was damaged in the collapse.
