Health a factor in retirement reasons

Grey Power says poor health is still a major reason people retire and this needs to be taken into account when considering the retirement age.

A report to the Treasury indicates the aging population is healthier than it used to be and more people retire because they are entitled to national super than for health reasons.

The report says more people should stay in paid work for longer.

Earlier this year the Treasury suggested that New Zealand raise the age people are eligible for superannuation.

But Grey Power president Roy Reid says the age for superannuation eligibilty can't be changed overnight.

''We feel it should remain where it is for the present time,'' he said.

But Labour finance spokesperson David Parker says the current superannuation scheme is not sustainable.

He says the Government will soon be spending more on superannuation than education if the retirement age is not raised.
