Queensland beat New South Wales 18-10 in the opening State of Origin rugby league match on Wednesday night.

NSW dominated the first 20 minutes of the match and much of the second half, but Queensland led 12-10 at half time and is on its way to winning for a seventh consecutive series.

It was their 10th win in the last 12 Origin clashes.

Controversy came seven minutes from time at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, when Greg Inglis was awarded a try by the video ref.

Blues hooker Robbie Farah was ruled to have kicked the ball from his grasp before Ellis scored. It was his 13th Origin try, a record for the event.

Earlier, NSW centre Michael Jennings was sin-binned for throwing a wild punch during a scuffle.
