The Government is to contribute $100 million towards new operating theatres at Auckland's Middlemore Hospital.

Health Minister Tony Ryall says the theatres are part of a $209 million development project designed to future-proof the busy hospital.

Mr Ryall says Counties Manukau, where the hospital is located, is one of the fastest-growing centres in the country - and the DHB has done more than 2000 extra operations over the past three years.

He says the Government has approved three new operating theatres and the replacement of 11 existing theatres.

Mr Ryall also says a new clinical services block will include a 42-bed assessment and planning unit and an 18-bed high-dependency unit.
