Seventy-seven years ago, India became an independent state and has since gone on to become one of the largest democracies in the world.

The India that was inherited by the early leaders of the country in 1947 was an economy that was battered by colonial exploitation and the horrors of partition. From an India perspective, the only way was up.

For a country that once transported rocket parts on bicycles and ox carts to launch sites, it now plans to send humans to space.

This is the story of India's evolution.
