The earthquakes in Christchurch just before Christmas have claimed another building.

The tremors on 23 December included one measuring 5.8.

The demolition of St Mary's Anglican Church in the suburb of Merivale began on Monday.

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority ordered its demolition on Friday.

Engineers decided it was in imminent danger of collapse and posed a threat to neighbouring properties.
