It’s Bollywood glitz and saucy social satire dating back to 1560s in India. One of India’s most beautiful dance traditions from the Maharashtra State is gracing the Wellington stage. 10 dancers from the Mudra Dance Creation are adorned in nine-meter long saris and heavy jewellery perform to the rhythm of the dholak (2 headed hand drum).
But it’s not all about beauty - the lyrics feature socio-political satire. Featured in Bollywood movies, this dance tradition draws its inspiration from topics as varied as politics, religion and society. The dancers show Lynda their moves and costumes backstage and talk about the politics and satire of Indian Dance –and Lavani – this dance form that’s wildly popular in Bollywood.
