Citizen science has been around a while now, a chance for amateurs to get involved with volunteering and for scientists to get help with collecting data.
But a kiwi group is going further. Government initiative Curious Minds has what it calls "extreme" citizen science in its Participatory Science Platform. The idea is it pairs novices with scientists for its projects.
National Coordinator Victoria Metcalf explained just why it's different to other platforms out there.
