Dr Chris Smith of The Naked Scientists on 'smart' targeted painkillers that can be activated using light.

Patient-controlled anesthesia can target just the place that pain hurts without affecting the whole body, including tissues that don’t need to be affected.

“What you’ve got here is basically a way of packaging up a drug into tiny bubbles which sequester it so it can’t go anywhere else in the body apart from where you want it to be active, and placing the control of when it is active, potentially, into the hands of the patient."
