A detailed description of the island and introductions to Kate, Bride and finally, Regan, the exotic solo sailor who was shipwrecked on the island. Kate and Regan live with their daughter back on the island. Georgia is Regan's lover and lives on the mainland. Boo Te Pa, Bride's uncle, who probably witnessed the murder,has been in prison for some years. He is mentally ill. He too has recently has returned to the island.
