The Tiwai aluminium smelter at Tiwai Point near Bluff is New Zealand only aluminium smelter. It is now the subject of a strategic review, and closure isn't entirely out of the question.
It has had cheaper power from the Manapouri hydro plant since 1971, and consumes 13 percent of the countries electricity supply - the single largest user of power in the country.
