The Panel with Chris Orr and Paula Penfold (Part 2)

From The Panel, 4:05 pm on 8 August 2019

What do you recall, if you're old enough, of the carless day scheme? According to the Sydney Morning Herald, information packs will be sent to NSW parents with advice for parents on identifying if their child is being "indoctrinated" by "radical gender activists" at school. The packs have been launched in parliament by One Nation MP Mark Latham. They're supported too by the Finance Minister. The panellists weigh in on on the packs. There's concern about the permanent closure of Trafalgar Street in Nelson, but also some excitement. Some locals support the move to make the street completely pedestrian-only, saying the area can be used for arts performances and as a publci space. But others are worried it would become a magnet for drunken behaviour. Matt Lowrie from Greater Auckland explains whether pedestrianisation of streets works or not. Thousands of kids in New Zealand who can't see or hear properly aren't getting the help they need - like glasses - because health checks only look for serious issues. Children are screened by technicians but less severe issues don't get picked up, and some kids may be falling through the cracks at school. We ask the panellists if our health checks need to be updated. An opinion piece in Stuff from a baby boomer talking about how much he enjoys retirement. He thanks "recent young commentators" for continuing to support his penison by paying taxes - just like he did for his parents and grandparents. He says those who are blaming "rich old boomers" for ruining the world should keep working and think of the long game. The panellists discuss.
