From The Panel, 4:03 pm on 9 July 2019

The government has announced new subsidies for electric and hybrid vehicles up to $8000 off new or near-new vehicles arriving in the country. But there's stick as well as carrot, with a $3000 fee added onto the import of vehicles with the highest greenhouse gas emissions. This will come into effect in 2021. Road Safety advocate Clive Matthew-Wilson looks at the pros and cons. New Zealand hasn't had a Race Relations Commissioner for over a year. The first attempt to replace Susan Devoy apparently didn't produce enough quality candidates, so the position was readvertised. The Commission did get someone but, they turned the job down. In the meantime, one of the unsuccessful candidates challenged the readvertisement process in Court. The New Zealand Federation of Multicultural Councils national president Pancha Narayanan says this has led to "an absence of a moderating effect." Unoversity of Otago law expert Andrew Geddis explains the legal aspect to the saga. The Auckland Council has done a pre-election survey which gauges awareness and attitudes of potential voters. Overall, 52.2 per cent of those canvassed supported compulsory voting. Many of those are young people. Otago University law professor Andrew Geddis talks about whether compulsory voting will fly.
