The Panel with Paula Penfold and Fete Taito (Part 1)

From The Panel, 4:03 pm on 2 July 2019

Among the many changes in law that took place yesterday July 1st was changes to the Youth Justice system. As of yesterday the youth court will now consider offending by 17-year-olds. The Youth Court previously dealth with offennding by people age 14-16. We ask the panellists what they make of the change. Sporting injuries for under-14s have surged. Since 2008 Injuries are up 60 percent in this age group, much higher growth than any other age. ACC believes it could be because young people are specialising at an earlier age in a single sport. We speak to Alex Chiet, National sport development at Sport NZ, about whether children should be doing high intensity training at such young age. New laws have been introduced in Queensland Australia, so drivers can now be fined a grand for using their phones while driving. If drivers are caught a second time they could lose their licence. But here the fine is just $80 and 20 demerit points. The AA says we should follow the Aussies in increasing the fines for the crime. We ask the panellists if they'd support a change to our law.
