The Panel with Beck Eleven and Ian Telfer (Part 2)

From The Panel, 4:05 pm on 28 September 2018

Entertainment doyen Barbra Streisand has released her first album in many years and it features a song called "Don't Lie to Me" which is a direct attack on US President Donald Trump. She laments her country losing things that were hard-fought for because of Mr Trump. But really is he responsible for every inequality in the USA? What the Panelists Beck Eleven and Ian Telfer want to talk about. A landlord has been left seemingly powerless after a tenant sublet her property and left her out of pocket. The tenant was evicted but he's already divided up the house, padlocking doors and bringing in other residents who paid rent to him and not the landlord. Police haven't acted saying no complaint has been laid. Andrew King of the Property Investors Federation talks about the power or lack of that property owners have in a situation like this. Tension is mounting between some Lower Hutt land-owners and the Greater Wellington Regional Council over its conservation values. The Council requires local councils to identify and protect indigenous ecosystems and habitats. Of the 116 of those SNAs (significant natural areas) in Hutt City 56 are on private land. Spokesman Pat McShane says many of these landowners feel they have no say over their own property. Many relish the idea of longer days in Summer but there is a dark side to more sunlight hours. Research shows that losing an hour of sleep in the Spring is associated with a spike in heart attacks, more workplace injuries, increased cluster headaches and more cyberloafing. People miss more medical appointments.
