Story of the Day for 28 August 2018

From The Panel, 3:46 pm on 28 August 2018

This year, the Red Delicious has been surpassedby the Gala apple in America. US growers are projected to produce 51.7 million boxes of Red Delicious apples and 52.4 million boxes of Gala apples. The Galas they sell in the US are the same as our Royal Galas - and they were created here in New Zealand - the first Gala tree resulted from a cross between a Golden Delicious and a Kidd's Orange Red planted in Greytown in the 1930s by orchardist J.H. Kidd. In a nod to the recent political ructions in Autralia, a Sydney designer has taken the ban the single use plastic bag idea, creating a line of bags that say 'Ban The Single Use Prime Minister' - an environmentally canvas shopping bag.
