ROTN - Ser 3 Ep 2 - 'Sowing the Seeds of Destruction'

From The War Artist

Director's note - One of the more curious sound effects that this episode demanded was a tummy gurgle. Now, this is a sound we are probably all familiar but it’s not one that existed in our extensive sound effects library. So the producer along with the sound engineer spent more than an hour putting together a very ‘bogan’ version of a tummy gurgle using a few bubble sound effects coupled and over laid with some squelches. We weren’t entirely certain that we had a good sound effect but time was running out and it would have to do. Then to our joy, during the first recorded run through one, of the actors approached the mic and produced a perfectly serviceably gurgle using their lips and tongue. Problem solved. So listen out for the tummy gurgle in this episode. Also great Foley work by the team creating, dogs, flies, birds and the pounding of maize.

Every Monday evening, the ROTN crew – writer, director, sound engineer and two assistants – pile into a recording studio along with a recently almost-complete script and 15 or so audience members..

A couple of hours later, and just minutes before broadcast, another finished episode of ROTN is delivered to the relief of the Nights presenter.

ROTN takes nerves of steel, a certain amount of reckless courage, a lot of silliness and a high level of collaboration -- not just from the crew, but from the in-studio audience members who can end up making sound effects and music or playing bit parts as humans, sheep, goats, horses, birds, Vikings and other animals.
