'We've always valued New Zealand' - Biman Prasad

From the collecton The House On Demand

Fiji's National Federation Party leader Biman Prasad says it appreciates New Zealand's support for its elections but Fiji still hasn't made enough progress towards its democratic ideals.

Four coup d'etat have taken place in Fiji over the past thirty years. The most recent was in 2006 and led by Frank Bainimarama, who is Fiji’s current Prime Minister.

Since then the country has held two elections, in 2014 and 2018 but Biman Prasad says it's an "elected dictatorship" and many laws used during military rule are still preserved in Fiji's constitution.

This interview is part of a series on the Speaker-led delegation to Tonga and Fiji. The full coverage can be found here.
