'Let's not just hear English in the House'

From The House , 10:35 pm on 1 August 2017

Sometimes it looks like MPs can do whatever they like in the House but there are rules, called Standing Orders, which set out what can and can't be done.

At the end of every parliamentary term, the rules are reviewed by the Standing Orders Committee and this time the review included recommendations to clarify the rules around speaking Pacific languages and wearing traditional Pacific dress in the House.

The recommendations came from PYLAT - a charity in Christchurch which encourages Pacific youth to engage with democracy and its chair Josiah Tualamali'i said those recommendations are just the start.
