Iwi in Waikato and Tamaki Makaurau are mourning the death of a senior Tainui kaumatua, who was an expert on tribal matters and the kingitanga; MPs have passed the first reading of a bill to settle treaty claims for an Auckland tribe, but the contents of the compensation package have received criticsim; Eastern Bay of Plenty iwi near a mass stranding of whales have spent today burying them; Today marks 133 years since the Maori settlement of Parihaka was invaded by colonial troops in 1881.
