8:12 Insight Quake-Prone Building Panic?
Owners of earthquake prone buildings are in a dilemma – pay expensive strengthening costs or do nothing and risk losing tenants and money. Up to 25,000 quake prone buildings dot the country, with heritage buildings making up at least 12 percent. The Government wants them all upgraded or knocked down within the next 20 years, but some building owners can't afford the work, prompting fears whole streets could be destroyed. Cushla Norman asks who should carry the cost of preserving New Zealand's history – building owners, the Government or both. And how will New Zealand's streetscape look in 20 years?
