New figures show Maori babies are five times more likely to be taken into state care

From Summer Report, 7:21 am on 16 January 2020

Newborn Māori babies are five times more likely to be taken into state care than non-Māori babies - and they are more likely to be taken using urgent court orders.

The Children's Commissioner has just released figures that he says show deep, persistent and increasing inequity in the the way Māori newborns are taken from their whanau by the state.

Judge Andrew Becroft hopes the statistics will feed into the multiple inquiries currently underway into how Oranga Tamariki deals with Māori children and their whanau.

Judge Becroft spoke to Leigh-Marama McLachlan.
