A landslide re-election for Taiwanese president snubs China

The Taiwanese people have re-elected their president Tsai Ing-Wen, with a landslide victory that commentators say is a snub to mainland China.

The results shows the Taiwanese people favour Tsai's position of keeping China firmly at arm's length, in opposition to China's claims of sovereignty over Taiwan.

Stephen Noakes is a Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at the University of Auckland, specializing in Chinese foreign policy, and spent three months in Taiwan in 2019.
