Immigration lawyer: deportation of Tongan woman was justified

From Summer Report, 7:24 am on 13 January 2020

An immigration lawyer says the decision to deport a Tongan woman who became paralysed following a surgery in New Zealand, is justified.

Taipaleti Vaeatangitau was injured playing netball in Tonga and had surgery in Auckland in 2016, only to wake to find herself a paraplegic.

Her family's visas expired in June 2018, but although it recognised what it called the 'exceptional humanitarian circumstances' of the case, the Immigration and Protection Tribunal declined to overturn the deportation order.
