US calls for talks with Iran

From Summer Report, 8:20 am on 10 January 2020

The United States says it's ready to engage in serious negotiations with Iran, following the assassination of top Iranian general, Qasem Soleimani, and missile strikes on US bases in Iraq Donald Trump said it appeared Iran was standing down after the missile strikes on US bases in Iraq, that did not harm any troops stationed there.

But Iran's ambassador to the United Nations, Majid Takht Ravanchi, dismissed the call to negotiate as unbelievable, given the fresh sanctions Washington was imposing, saying Washington had initiated the escalation and animosity when it killed the general.

The BBC's security correspondent, Frank Gardner, spoke to Logan Church.
