Health system coping with aftermath of Whakaari disaster

From Summer Report, 8:33 am on 9 January 2020

A month on from the deadly Whakaari volcano eruption, staff at burns units across New Zealand continue to work tirelessly to help victims, many of whom are from overseas.

Thirteen people remain in units - that's eight in Middlemore, two at Waikato and Hutt Valley and one at Christchurch.

Ministry of Health chief executive and director general of health Ashley Bloomfield, said the public health system had coped well with the demand.

He spoke to reporter Jordan Bond.
