Kuwait has cut diplomatic ties with Iran as a regional row over the execution of Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr in Saudi Arabia deepens.

His death was among 47 Saudi executions over the weekend, which have ramped up regional tensions in the Gulf.

The New Zealand government said it did not agree with the killings but says it won't affect trade deal talks.

New Zealand First leader and former Foreign Affairs minister Winston Peters says the muted response is not good enough.
