09.10 Water Safety NZ's message after Opoutere drowning

Yesterday's drowning at Opoutere beach in Coromandel adds to a growing death toll over the summer period.  In one of the biggest rescue efforts this summer six people were pulled from the water yesterday morning: one of them died and another was airlifted to Waikato Hospital. The search is ongoing for a seventh swimmer. It follows another drowning south of Whangamatā on Tuesday. Daniel Gerrard is CEO of Water Safety NZ.

 

09.20 Chatham Islands' only brewer

Chatham Islands fresh seafood and pristine honey have a reputation for unbeatable quality, but those lucky enough to visit are also getting a chance to sample locally brewed beer. Simone Croon started Breezy Brewery - the Island's only locally-brewed drop - just before the Covid pandemic. Simone tells Anna how she got into beer making, and what life has been like on the Islands this summer.

09.35 Tracking Wellington's newly-released kiwi

We're checking in with Wellington's newly-released kiwi. Last November, for the first time in around 100 years, eleven North Island brown kiwi were released into the Mākara hills after an ambitious pest eradication project. The kiwi have been fitted with GPS monitors, and this week conservationists have been out checking on the birds. Capital Kiwi's Paul Stanley Ward who leads the project joins Anna to give an update on how they're getting on.

Imagine a CV with a list of skills which reading sword swallowing, knife-throwing, chainsaw juggling and fire-eating.  Australian Chayne Hultgren aka The Space Cowboy holds 55 Guiness World Records for his death defying and unusual streetshow stunts. He's on his way to New Zealand to perform in the 30th Buskers Festival in Christchurch.

It's an age old tradition - bringing cake and treats into the office to share with colleagues. But in Britain the Food Standards Agency head is urging workers not to bring sweet treats into the office to avoid testing the willpower of colleagues. It's been compared to passive smoking. We speak to nutritionist Claire Turnbull about whether we should call time on shared office baking and treats.

10.20 Nat Geo camps offer unique opportunity for budding photographers

For more than 130 years National Geographic has been informing and educating people around the world with incredible stories and stunning photographs. This year a number of its photographers are running a series of photo camps which provide an introduction to photography and storytelling for young people throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. Nat Geo veteran photographer Erika Larsen is one of those involved. She took  time out to speak with Anna about the young people she's encountered and the amazing photos being produced.

Yeshi Desta came to New Zealand as a refugee more than 20 years ago and loves introducing New Zealanders to the tastes and flavours of eastern Africa. She runs My Mother's Kitchen, whipping up pop-up authentic Ethiopian feasts at restaurants, events and even home kitchens across Auckland. She's joins Anna to share some culinary delights from her homeland.

10.50 Museum stop - Mangawhai Museum

We're in Northland today visiting Mangawhai Museum on our museum stop. The museum is full of stories and treasures centred around the beautiful Mangawhai Harbour. It's a new and modern museum with a distinctive roof shaped like a stingray. Museum manager Tom Long joins Anna to share some local history.
