Spectrum for 19 June 2011

Aileen, Leena and Diane meet each week at the ‘Kidz First’ Children’s Hospital in South Auckland to sort dozens of new woollen garments, destined for needy babies. The three women are long time knitters. Just down the road at Auckland women’s prison, inmates Tracey and Michelle are newly arrived knitting fans. But all of them are part of the 300-strong ‘Knitter Natter’ group which creates beanies, cardigans, booties and blankets for the hospital.

For the first time ever, the prison inmates have just met some of their outmates.There are about ten women who knit for the cause inside Wiri’s Auckland Regional Women’s Correctional facility. The other day a hundred of their outside counterparts came for a visit and a chat over morning tea and lunch.
