More than 50 million years ago, several thousand gigatons of methane escaped from the sea floor. The release had an immediate and violent impact upon the temperature of both the sea and on land and the biology of the planet. Palaeontologists Chris Hollis and James Crampton talk about the methane megaburp and its relevance to modern climate change.
