This week on One in Five, engineering students get a first-hand glimpse of how their design can impact on the disabled community. A Canterbury University course in sustainable planning and design attracts participants from around the country, some of whom are already working in the sector. A practical component of the course involves students navigating the campus and futher afield in wheelchairs, with crutches, or with vision impaired goggles.

The head of the course, a senior lecturer in transportation engineering, Dr Glen Koorey, says the training is even more relevant at the moment with parts of Christchurch out of action after the earthquakes. He says there's now an opportunity for the new, rebuilt Christchurch to provide a more accessible environment for all pedestrians.
