The author of Sick from Freedom: The Deadly Consequences of Emancipation, which tells the largely unknown story of how disease and sickness shaped the meaning of freedom for ex-slaves after the American Civil War. He estimates at least one quarter of the four million former slaves got sick or died between 1862 and 1870.
