The national grid has had a major outage at the top of the South Island - cutting power to tens of thousands of homes from Blenheim, to Nelson and Greymouth. Transpower says teams are looking into what the cause of the outage is - and apologises for the inconvenience. Marlborough Lines is reporting at least 26,000 properties are without power, while in Nelson traffic lights are not working. Westpower is reporting about 8,000 outages on its network.
Rare red level strong wind warnings are now in effect for Canterbury High Country, Marlborough from Cape Campbell southwards, Wellington and Wairarapa south of Carterton. Mark Ryall is executive general manager of grid delivery at Transpower and joins Kathryn to discuss.
