A group of tree enthusiasts in Kapiti have planted what is believed to be one of only a few Miyawaki-style microforests in the county.
The practice is where a small amount of land is densely planted with native species to mimic natural forests. The method has led to about 1000 micro forests in Japan, and a few years ago Nelson pair Colin Davis and AJ Clarken, with the help of the Nelson Muslim Group planted their a microforest on a rural property in the region.
The Kapiti group planted trees about a month ago, with some help from their local council. It's a 100-square-metre space in Waikanae with almost 400 native trees and plants in it. Geoff Scrase is chair of TreeSpace Kapiti and talks to Susie about the project. Colin Davis then speaks about how the Nelson plot is going.
