Auckland Council has released an ambitious proposal to reduce the city's transport emissions by two thirds over the next eight years.

The Transport Emissions Reduction Pathway will encourage people to use public transport, cycle or walk if they are travelling under six kilometres.

It also aims to convert 30 per cent of the city's vehicles to electric, and make buses, trains and ferries low-emission.

Auckland mayor Phil Goff says transport is the single biggest source of carbon pollution, accounting for more than 40 percent of the region's emissions.
