Work begins on Archibald Baxter memorial

From Nine To Noon, 9:34 am on 11 February 2021

Work has finally begun in Dunedin on a memorial to prominent pacifist Archibald Baxter. The project has been nearly 10 years in the making, and it's hoped the national memorial on the George Street site will be completed sometime in April. Baxter was a conscientious objector during World War One and refused to enroll in the Army, leading to his arrest and eventual deportation to the Western Front.

While his beliefs were controversial, the process of finding a site for the memorial was not without its trouble either. Kathryn talks to Professor Kevin Clements, who has chaired the Archibald Baxter Memorial Trust since its inception.
