Sydney based writer and film-maker Miro Bilborough has written a memoir about her time as a teenager living in a tiny hippie community in the outer reaches of the Marlborough Sounds in the 1970s.

She speaks with Kathryn Ryan about her unconventional childhood - banished aged seven to live with her communist grandmother, before joining her father at Manaroa in Pelorus Sound as part of a small commune.

In The Time Of The Manaroans is published by Victoria University Press.
