A community initiative is underway on the West Coast which aims to make Greymouth the safest place in the country to have a heart attack. Rotary, St John Greymouth and Tai Poutini Polytechnic are working together in a local fundraising and training effort to increase the first aid skills of West Coasters.
The aim is to have 1,000 people familiar with CPR and AEDs (Automated external defibrillators) by Easter, and have defibrillators installed at key locations throughout the district.
Kathryn speaks to Save a Life project co-ordinator, Joan Fairhall, and Marg Becker, a Kaiata local who has been through the training.
