'Rocky Road' is the story of  Darrell Lea, the Australian family confectionery company which has seen four generations of the Lea family make bitter sacrifices to try and make it in the sweet business. Darrell Lea was founded in Sydney in 1927, by an English immigrant, Harry Lea, but this chapter of the story begins in 1935 when 19 year old Valerie Everitt eloped with Monty Lea, the young part-owner of his father's chocolate shop.

'Rocky Road's author is Robert Wainwright who has been a journalist for almost 40 years, and has made something of a name for himself by unearthing forgotten histories of indomitable Australian women. He is the author of, among others, Rose: The unauthorised biography of Rose Hancock Porteous,The Killing of Caroline Byrne, Born or Bred (the story of killer Martin Bryant),  Sheila, and Miss Muriel Matters. This is his twelfth book.
