Breaking up: Is a 50-50 assets split out of date?

From Nine To Noon, 9:31 am on 30 October 2017

The New Zealand Law Commission is undertaking a review of how couples' assets are divided should they break up. Under current law it's a 50-50 split if the couple is married, in a civil union or a de facto relationship, but is that out of date? The Property (Relationships) Act was brought into law 40 years ago, and in that time the nature of relationships in New Zealand has changed significantly. Kathryn Ryan speaks with law commissioner Helen McQueen, and the chair of the Family Law Section at the New Zealand Law Society, Kirsty Swadling.
