Why humans need rituals

John ShaverAnthropologist John Shaver on why humans engage in repetitive ritualistic behaviour, especially in times of uncertainty and stress. Examples include not stepping on cracks, or throwing spilled salt over the shoulder, and aspects of the practice of many organised religions. Shaver says that religious belief has increased in post-earthquake Christchurch as people seek ritual and a sense of control. He joins Kathryn Ryan.
