Brando Yelavich on circumnavigating New Zealand on foot

Two months ago, 20 year old Brando Yelavich became the first person to circumnavigate the entire New Zealand coastline on foot.

"It's always been in my head, everytime I went to the beach I wondered,  whats round the next corner, what would happen if you kept going? So I decided to find out what was around every corner."

It was an incredibly tough journey. Brando had to scramble along cliffs and jagged rocks, plunge into turgid seas, he almost drowned and suffered near hypothermia.

He started his journey at Cape Reinga in February 2013, and made his way down the west coast of both islands, before coming back up the east coast. Overall he traversed around 8-thousand kilometres of often rugged coastline, mostly living off the land and sea.

Brando Yelavich made the decision to walk the coastline after  realising he had taken the wrong road in life. He was smoking marijuana every day and had no job prospects. He realised this was not the life he wanted, and decided to take on a challenge, and raise money for charity in the process.

Brando Yelavich talks to Kathryn Ryan about his journey.
