09.20 Lads Without Labels

A club for lads based at the University of Canterbury is challenging the stigma around mental health.  Lads Without Labels is a not-for-profit charity dedicated to improving young men’s mental health by talking about it, and keeping fit. Flat visits, gym sessions and sports events, financial savvy and tips like how to change a tyre are all in the remit.  Susie Ferguson speaks with President of Lads Without Labels Tom Vincent.

09:30 Grandma's road trip: Joy and Brad's excellent adventures

Grandmother and grandson Joy and Brad Ryan from Ohio are on a quest to visit every US national park. Their adventure began a few years ago when Brad realised his grandmother had never seen a mountain.So off they went to see the Smokey Mountains on the border of North Carolina and Tennessee.  That began a quest to visit every site in the US with national park in its name. Now aged 92, Joy and grandson Brad have almost completed the mission. You can follow their journey on instragram @grandmajoysroadtrip.

10:05  New Zealand's youngest ever mayor

This year Gore elected the country's youngest ever mayor, when Ben Bell, aged 23, won the mayoralty by just 8 votes. Ben Bell edged out the six-term incumbent, Tracy Hicks. Despite his youth, Ben has a varied background, with previous jobs in the Horizons Regional Council, and has started several successful businesses.

10:15 Best in Show: Charly Houtos

Charly Houtos is our champion junior dog handler.  The 18 year old from Christchurch is getting ready to represent New Zealand at the world's biggest dog show, Crufts. Charly mainly shows cavaliers, rottweilers and samoyeds, and Tobi her Japanese Shiba Inu, who may be her favourite.  It could be argued Charly is the real star of the show. She's severely allergic to dogs!

10:30  Jeremy Taylor's top music for 2022

An eclectic end of year faves selection, with tracks from some albums that have sparked joy. Jeremy says it's been a huge year for NZ releases - Marlon Williams "My Boy", Tami Neilson "Kingmaker", The Beths "Expert In A Dying Field", Avantdale Bowling Club.

11:20 Kiwi reintroduced to Wellington hills after 100 years

Paul Ward first appeared on Nine to Noon in 2018 when he outlined an ambitious plan to reintroduce wild kiwi to Wellington within five years. Four years later, 11 North Island brown have been released into a predator-free area on the hills above Makara. This follows the setting and monitoring of 4500 traps across the 23,000 hectares. Paul tells Kathryn the Capital Kiwi project wants Wellingtonians from Ōwhiro Bay to Karori and Ōhariu falling to sleep to the sound of kiwi calling.
